Somewhere between the first roll and the first birthday cake, most Australian parents find themselves typing the same thing into Google: pre-walker shoes. What are they? When does my baby need them? And do they actually matter?

After 21 years of making podiatrist-approved pre-walkers here in Australia, here's everything we'd tell a friend over coffee.

What are pre-walker shoes?

Pre-walker shoes are ultra-soft, flexible-soled shoes designed for babies who aren't yet walking independently — from newborns through to crawlers and cruisers. They aren't miniature versions of adult shoes, and that's the point: their job isn't support, it's gentle protection and warmth that never interferes with how a foot naturally moves.

A baby's foot is mostly cartilage, gradually forming bone over the early years. Feet in that window need to wriggle, splay, grip and feel — which is why a proper pre-walker has a sole soft enough to fold in one hand, a wide toe box, and breathable natural materials.

The three stages before first steps

Pre-crawling (0–6 months or so). Feet need nothing but warmth and the freedom to kick. Soft suede-soled shoes or booties are perfect for pram outings and chilly mornings — think of them as slippers with a job.

Crawling (6–12 months). Hands and knees everywhere, toes pushing off constantly. Soft soles protect against scrapes while letting all that pushing strengthen little muscles.

Cruising (roughly 10–18 months). Your baby pulls up on the couch and starts sidestepping along it — the dress rehearsal for walking. A hybrid sole (soft suede with a touch of rubber grip) gives traction on smooth Australian floorboards and tiles without blocking ground-feel.

Does my baby actually need shoes yet?

Honest answer: indoors, barefoot is best. Podiatrists and paediatricians agree that bare feet build balance, proprioception and strength better than anything else. Pre-walkers earn their keep when bare feet can't do the job — outdoors, on cold winter mornings, at daycare, on hot pavement, or when tiny toes need protecting from the world (and the shopping trolley).

So don't rush — but don't feel guilty about a beautiful pair of soft soles either. Used the way they're intended, they're protection, not restriction.

What to look for (the podiatrist's checklist)

  • A sole you can fold in one hand — zero-drop and ultra-flexible, so the foot moves as if barefoot
  • A wide, splay-friendly toe box — toes should spread, never cramp
  • Breathable natural materials — little feet sweat twice as much as ours; soft leather beats synthetics every time
  • Easy, secure fastening — elastic entry or hook-and-loop that survives a wriggle
  • Verifiable expert backing — SKEANIE pre-walkers are developed in collaboration with podiatrists across Australia, the UK and the USA, including leading infant foot development specialist Tracy Byrne

Getting the size right

Measure your baby's foot at the end of the day (feet are largest then), from heel to longest toe in millimetres, and match it to our sizing chart — wriggle room is already factored in, so don't add extra. Re-measure every 6–8 weeks: little feet can grow half a size in two months, and a pre-walker that fit at Christmas may be squeezing by Easter.

Pre-walker FAQs

What's the difference between pre-walkers and first walkers?
Pre-walkers are for babies not yet walking on their own — soft suede soles, maximum flexibility. First walkers add light rubber grip and durability for independent steps outdoors. Our collections are organised by stage so you can't pick wrong.

Are soft sole shoes safe for cruising?
Yes — they're ideal. Cruisers need ground-feel to learn balance; a stiff sole actually makes the job harder. Choose a pre-walker with light grip for smooth floors.

Can pre-walkers be handed down?
Best not. Soft leather moulds to its first owner's feet, so a hand-me-down pair asks a new foot to fit an old shape.

What about socks?
Natural-fibre socks under pre-walkers are perfect in winter. Just re-check fit with socks on — they take up real room in a tiny shoe.
